SZYPOSZYNSKI, IRENA (nee: Wasella)

80, passed away on September 3, 2016. Born in Poland, Irena survived WWII and deportation to the “Inhuman Lands” of the Soviet Union by the N.K.V.D. After evacuation from the U.S.S.R., she lived in refugee camps in Persia and Lebanon. At war’s end she was settled in England and met and married her husband, Piotr. Unable to return to Communist-occupied Poland, Irena and Piotr settled in Bayonne. Irena worked at Bayonne Hospital, then at Milwid & Lojewski Insurance Company and later at the Nowy Dziennik/Polish Daily News in its advertising section and then at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty as a Research Assistant. She also worked briefly at Midtown Community School as a teacher’s aide. She was an active communicant at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church (Polish) where she worked on the committee that produced the 75th Anniversary Parish Yearbook. She was a founding member of the Polish American Heritage Committee of Bayonne. She was also a member of the Polish American Congress, Bayonne Chapter. Irena was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit by the Polish Government-in-Exile for her work on behalf of promoting the cause of Poland. Irena is predeceased by her father Ignacy, her mother, Jadwiga, her husband Piotr, her uncles Boleslaw, Jozef, Mieczylaw, and Wladyslaw and her aunt Leontyna. Irena is survived by her daughter, Halina, her son, Andrew and his wife, Grazyna, and their son Michael, her cousin in America, Hala Polon, and extended family in Poland.
