North Bergen skateboarder in critical condition after being hit by ice cream truck
Union City police said that on Monday evening, they found a 20-year-old North Bergen man unconscious on Bergenline Avenue in Union City where – while riding his skateboard – he had apparently been struck by a Mr. Softee truck.
“At 10:30 p.m., Monday night Union City Police, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Union City EMS and Jersey City Medical center Paramedics responded to Bergenline Avenue & 30th Street on the report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle,” said Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari in a release. “He was was riding a skateboard on the sidewalk, south on Bergenline Avenue, when he continued into the intersection and was struck by a Mr. Softee truck that was travelling east on 30th Street. The driver of the truck, 64, of Cliffside Park, remained at the scene.”
The young man was transported by Union City and Jersey City EMS to the Jersey City Medical Center where he had to undergo emergency surgery and is currently listed in critical condition.
Crash Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office are reviewing the evidence and video from local businesses in the area.
The truck appeared to have the right of way. The victim was wearing earbuds at the time of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation and no charges are pending at this time.
Water main construction to impact traffic around 43rd-44th streets
Construction will begin on Monday, Aug. 15 to replace water mains in the area of 43rd and 44th streets, according to a statement from the township Department of Public Works. This may cause a temporary inconvenience for access to and from residences and businesses. The DPW said every effort will be made to assure that the inconveniences are minimal. The anticipated duration of this project is eight weeks, and all work will be completed as quickly as possible.
Work will occur on 44th Street between Grand Avenue and Durham Avenue, as well as Cottage Avenue and Meadowview Avenue at 44th Street, and on Newkirk and Durham Avenues between 43rd and 44th streets.
“No Parking” signs will be posted. If a street is posted on a day for garbage pick-up, residents should have their garbage at the curb by 6 a.m.

North Bergen Police Department announces September dates for TAPS Initiative
The North Bergen Police Department will host four community meetings, known as North Bergen Township Alternative Policing Strategy, or NB TAPS, in separate areas of the township in the month of September.
The initiative helps bring the Police Department into the community with informal meetings, where North Bergen residents can voice their concerns and issues in person.
All meetings are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, Sept. 14, they’ll meet in the downtown library on 2123 Kennedy Blvd. On Thursday, Sept. 15, they’ll meet in Town Hall on 4233 Kennedy Blvd. Meet officers on Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the uptown library on 8411 Bergenline Ave. The last meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 8101 Kennedy Blvd.

David Lopez is a rising star and singing sensation in Panama who performs a variety of Latin American musical styles.
