‘A great night under the stars’

The town of Guttenberg began its summer concert series 10 years ago, and it’s still going strong with two more concerts left this season. This year the Bronx Wanderers and Nikki Torres & Rhythm Machine Band have already performed outdoors, and the Cameos and the Infernos are still to come.

The Cameos will appear Tuesday, Aug. 16, and the Infernos on Thursday, Aug. 25. All shows take place between 70th and 71st street on Boulevard East at 6 p.m.

The Cameos consist of eight band members singing and playing percussion, guitar, keys, and more. Most members were born or raised in New Jersey. They play ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s do-wop, and even some songs from today.

In an interview last week, leader of the Cameos and the drummer Paul Stuart said, “It’s rewarding when we play to a big audience, because they know we do oldies and it brings back memories for them.”

According to Stuart they perform over 200 songs around the country, and are working on releasing a new CD in 2017.

“I work with seven talented musicians, and it’s a pleasure,” Stuart added.

The Infernos are known as America’s number one show band and New Jersey’s premier wedding band. They’ve been performing since 1977, and even performed for President Obama. The band is known for Frank Sinatra classics and for songs from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s.

“There are lots of residents, visitors, and fans at the concerts. We get at least 600 to 700 people,” the Director of Public Safety Joe Magenheimer said. He said residents and guests can enjoy food vendors as well.

“It’s a community event that I’m happy to do every year. The town doesn’t get a lot of free entertainment like this, but it’s small and it’s a great night under the stars. Lots of people come,” he added.
