Will state liquor license laws change? Maybe, maybe not

HUDSON COUNTY — WNYC ran a story Tuesday about state liquor license laws that limit the number of licenses by the number of city residents. The story mentions Hoboken and suggests that the city would have to grow by several thousand people in order to add more liquor licenses.
But is Hoboken a good example of a city that needs more licenses? It’s a mile-square city and has the distinction of being one of the cities with the highest density of active licenses in the country (approximately 140 licenses per…well, square mile.)
The city also has laws about the proximity of new liquor-serving establishments to existing ones (see the “500 foot rule” here).
