To the Editor:
I would like to thank Bayonne Council Member, Sal Gullace for helping me get repairs done to my apartment. I went to Sal at Bayonne City Hall and showed him pictures and videos of repairs needed when the Management of my building would not do repairs.
The Bayonne Health Department and the NJTO (New Jersey Tenants Organization) were also helping me.
Remember Tenants: Read “The Truth in Renting” which you can find online. When repairs are needed to your apartment, ALWAYS put repairs needed in writing (Certified Mail or e-mail) to the owner of your building. Never call the owner or super to get repairs done. If you have to go to the Health Department or your Council Member they will want to know if you put repairs needed in writing first. Always take pictures and videos of repairs needed to show the Health Department and your Council Member.
Give the owner two weeks to respond before going in person to the Health Department and your Council Member. You can also write to the Bayonne Health Department to complain if needed.
You can complain in writing to the Bayonne Building Inspectors and Fire Prevention when there are leaks or other serious damage. You can also write to the Department of Community Affairs in Trenton, New Jersey to request a State Inspector come to your apartment to investigate repairs needed.
