BHS Athletic appoints new football coach

The Bayonne High School Athletic Department, home of the “Fighting Bees”, announced the appointment of Mr. Jason Acerra as the new head varsity football coach. Mr. Acerra is a graduate of Secaucus High School and continued his education at New Jersey City University and Montclair State University, where he attained his B.A. in Special Education and M.A. in Educational leadership, respectively.

Mr. Acerra has been employed with the Bayonne School District for the past 12 years as a Special Education teacher, and brings with him an extensive coaching background that has prepared him for his new role as head football coach of the “Fighting Bees”.

Coach Acerra has spent the last three years serving as the Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach, and Defensive Line Coach at Bayonne High School. Before coaching at Bayonne, Jason coached at Secaucus High School from 2000-2012.

Bayonne High School Athletic Director, John R. Calcaterra stated, “Coach Acerra brings a great deal of football knowledge and coaching experience to our program, which has a long and important history of success! Coach Acerra’s passion and enthusiasm for the game of football is contagious… the school community and our student-athletes are fortunate to have him lead us in a new direction.”

“On behalf of the Bayonne Board of Education and Central Office administration I am delighted to welcome Jason Acerra as our new Head Football Coach. Coach Acerra is a role model for our student-athletes. As a special needs educator, he treated his students, parents, and co-workers with respect and ensured that everyone that crossed his path had the opportunity to become successful. I know that he will transfer the successes he had in the classroom on to the playing field. Our students will be in excellent hands and I look forward to watching our Bees compete in the Fall, Go Bees!,” Dr. Patricia L. McGeehan, Superintendent of Schools said.

“My coaching philosophy is based on the core values of commitment, communication, accountability and loyalty. I believe in establishing relationships with the community, alumi, and city recreation programs, as well as, everyone involved at the high school level. While I want our students to succeed out on the field, they have to be students first,” Acerra stated. “As the head football coach, I promise to lead with a respect for the tradition of the past, a vision for the future and a sincere commitment to the school community, football program, and the student-athletes,” Acerra said.

“I congratulate Jason on his appointment as new head football coach at Bayonne High School. We are all looking forward to a successful Bees football season,”BHS Principal Rich Baccarella stated.
