Bayonne Bridge to close overnight at 7 p.m. starting April 18

BAYONNE — Beginning Monday, April 18, the Bayonne Bridge’s schedule of Monday-through-Thursday overnight closures will begin an hour and a half earlier – at 7 p.m., rather than 8:30 p.m.

The bridge’s weekday schedule of daytime and overnight closures will otherwise remain the same, as follows:

Except when announced otherwise, the Bayonne Bridge currently closes on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and overnight on Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. The only pending change is that, starting April 18, these overnight closures will begin at 7 p.m. The bridge will also continue to close at varying times on weekends.

Information for motorists: The Goethals Bridge will continue to serve as a detour for vehicles when the Bayonne Bridge is closed.

Information for bus riders: The new Monday-through-Thursday evening schedule will affect the S89 Limited Bus that departs at 7:40 p.m. from the 34th Street Light Rail Station in Bayonne to Morningstar Road/Walker Street in Staten Island. That bus, which normally passes over the Bayonne Bridge, will instead detour over the Goethals Bridge. Buses that use the Bayonne Bridge closer to the beginning of the 7 p.m. hour will be able to use the bridge without having to detour. The Port Authority has coordinated with the MTA on these changes.

Partial or full weekend closures will also continue, with advance announcement by the Port Authority.

The Port Authority and Skanska Koch/Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (JV) have determined that the new closure schedule is necessary to ensure the Bayonne Bridge “Raise the Roadway” project is completed according to its current timetable. These closures have been coordinated with other transportation agencies to minimize traffic impacts.
