JERSEY CITY – An investigation into alleged grade fixing at Innovation High School was confirmed at the March 15 Jersey City Board of Education caucus.
Superintendent Dr. Marcia Lyles said she didn’t yet know the details, but confirmed rumors among parents that an investigation is underway by the district.
Innovation High School opened its doors two years ago to about 100 students as a partnership with the Institute for Student Achievement and New Jersey City University. In addition to following the district curriculum, there will be a focus on S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, the arts and math). The school within a school is designed to give students a jump start on a college education. Innovation students were chosen for the school through a lottery system after the number of applications exceeded the number of open spaces.
Monique Andrews, a parent and frequent speaker at Board of Education members said she had heard that one or more teachers may have been involved in fixing grades.
Board member Gerald Lyons asked Lyles at the meeting if this was true.
“I’ve just been told this minute that there is an investigation,” Lyles told the board.
