HUDSON COUNTY AND BEYOND – New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher is marking March 15, National Agriculture Day, by calling on New Jersey residents to acknowledge the important place agriculture holds in their daily lives and the economic gains it brings to the state.
National Agriculture Day highlights the importance of farmers to New Jersey and the nation. Garden State farmers produce more than $1 billion in fruits, vegetables, and other products each year.
“The New Jersey agriculture industry is diverse, from growing more than 100 different fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as grains, plants, trees, shrubs and flowers, to producing eggs, milk, meat, seafood and fiber,” Fisher said.
New Jersey ranks nationally in the top 10 in the production of clams, sea scallops, surf clams, cranberries, blueberries, bell peppers, spinach, tomatoes, peaches, blueberries, cucumbers, squash, snap beans, seafood catch, cabbage, and wine.
New Jersey has more than 9,000 farms with more than 700,000 acres.
