Marriage, Italian style

Filmmaker Frank Gigante will present Sabino Matera’s film “La Zuite,” a cultural comedy film from Puglia, Italy, on March 13 at The Juventus S. Club, 157 Sixth St., Hoboken, at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
The film will be in the Italian dialect language of Andria, Italy, with Italian subtitles.
Gigante, a proud Pugliese, will share the film thanks to the club’s president Nick Amato, Vice President Bernard Amato, and Director of Family Day Angela Minervini, as well as all of the members.
Gigante encourages the Pugliese community to join them for the screening.
The narrative documents how things were back then, as well as a lively representation of culture, religion, and traditions of a past that cannot be forgotten.

A big day for the bride

The film is based upon funny but true events. It’s the 1960s in Andria Italy, and there is turmoil in the streets.
It’s the big day for “La zùitë” (“ the bride”), and for the marriage of two young people, Gina and Nicholas, and the genuine folk traditions in a city populated by figures like the milkman, the grinder, the shoemaker, the seller of lupini beans, the oil seller, etc…
Nicholas sends out “u mëzzèinë” (“The mediator”) to ask for Gina’s hand in marriage. Everything takes place according to precise rituals at those times in this comedic film. The bride would receive “u chëngirtë” (a set of matching earrings, bracelet and necklace) from her in-laws, while the parents of the bride would buy the bedroom sheets which were carefully washed and ironed then displayed to show family and neighbors.
