WEEHAWKEN – To engage parents and community members in discussions about the expanded Advanced Placement course offerings and opportunities at Weehawken High School in 2016-17, the district hold an “AP Night” on March 2.
The Weehawken Township school district was recently selected by the College Board to implement AP Capstone, an innovative high school diploma program that allows students to develop the skills that matter most for their future college success: research, collaboration, and communication.
The AP Capstone Program includes a two course sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research. Developed in direct response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers, AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific rigor of Advanced Placement courses and exams.
Weehawken High School will start the AP Capstone Program in the fall of 2016. According to Weehawken Board President Richard Barsa, the application for Weehawken to participate in the AP Capstone Program was submitted by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert R. Zywicki.
“This innovative program will prepare a broader, more diverse student population for college and career success. AP Capstone also provides our teachers with flexibility in the curriculum to expand access to challenging course work and the development of important future ready skills,” stated Dr. Zywicki.
Recognition for Weehawken’s AP Program
District officials were also recently informed that Weehawken was named to two prestigious lists of top performing districts published annually by the College Board. For increased participation and scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams, Weehawken was one of 425 districts in the U.S. to be named to the 2015 AP Honor Roll. Weehawken was the only district from Hudson County, NJ on the 2015 AP Honor Roll.
Additionally, Weehawken was recognized on the Gaston Caperton Honor Roll as one of 130 districts in the U.S. for excelling in creating opportunities for traditionally underrepresented students. Dr. Zywicki views the district’s AP Capstone selection and AP Honor Roll recognitions as being “demonstrative of a robust commitment by Board President Richard Barsa, the Trustees, administration, and teachers to providing Weehawken’s students access to the most rigorous, challenging and relevant curricula.”
