BAYONNE – The origin, but not the cause, of a five-alarm fire on Broadway in Bayonne on Jan. 19, which involved three buildings and displaced dozens, has been determined, according to a fire official.
After a comprehensive review, the fire investigator in charge reported that the fire originated in a middle bedroom on the second floor of 745 Broadway, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers. It extended through the bedroom window into an air shaft between 741-743 Broadway and 745 Broadway.
“The fire then traveled upward and outward between the enclosed combustible void space between the two structures, further extending into the roof structure of each building as well,” Rogers said.
The investigator reported that the fire began near a badly damaged electrical outlet and the remnants of a flat-screen television.
“But an electrical fire could not be conclusively determined, due to the extensive fire damage to the devices and to the bedroom itself, which was reportedly being used as a storage room,” Rogers said.
