‘March on Washington Street’ to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Hoboken

HOBOKEN – The 15th annual “March on Washington Street” will recognize the civil rights movement and spread Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to service on Friday, Jan. 15.
Students from the Hoboken Charter School will reenact the original march on Washington D.C. in August 1963 with the contemporary theme “From Selma to Ferguson: Racism and Non-Violent Protest in America.”
The march will start at 10:05 a.m. at 713 Washington St. at the Hoboken Charter School at 713 Washington St. and end at City Hall (94 Washington St.) where Mayor Dawn Zimmer will issue a proclamation.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day will land on Monday, Jan. 18 this year.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a pastor and leader of the Civil Rights Movement and helped organize the March on Washington in 1963, the site of his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He was killed in Memphis on April 4, 1968, where he attended a rally and delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” address.
