UPDATE: Additional Hoboken water main break fails, some work may continue through Thanksgiving

HOBOKEN – City officials urged residents in the southwest portion of Hoboken to conserve water and warned of low water pressure as they worked to repair a 36-inch valve that failed Sunday night.
The news follows a massive water main break that left many in Hoboken and some in Newport in Jersey City without water on Sunday. The valve that failed feeds water from Jersey City into Hoboken.
“Excavation of the site was completed overnight and highly specialized equipment will be used to conduct this repair. Repairing the valve is a complex procedure, due to its size and location underground, and could take several days,” read an advisory from the city sent out on Monday.
The alert added that the repairs could potentially last through Thanksgiving.
As a result of the work to fix the main break, residents (especially those on higher floors), should expect lower water pressure, discolored water or, at times, no water at all, according to the city.
“The discoloration is caused by high levels of naturally occurring minerals in the water and a buildup of harmless sediment in the water mains,” read the alert, previously advising residents to boil their water for additional safety precautions.
