Bayonne Fire Department responds to dryer fire

BAYONNE – Bayonne firefighters extinguished a blaze on Wednesday, Nov. 18 that was sparked by a malfunctioning dryer, a fire official said.
At 10:13 a.m., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to 435 Ave. E on the report of a structure fire.
“Arriving firefighters confronted smoke on the second and third floors of the four-story brick building used as condominium occupancy,” said Bayonne Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
Firefighters stretched hoses to the second floor into a condominium unit, where they extinguished a fire in the laundry hall.
The blaze was declared under control at 10:45 a.m.
One occupant was in the dwelling at the time of the fire, and reported that she saw fire coming from the dryer.
The fire damage was confined to the second floor condominium unit, and the unit below suffered minimal water damage, Rogers said.
The occupant of the affected unit was displaced and sought shelter with family.
“The remaining tenants were able to reoccupy, pending restoration of services by a qualified technician,” Rogers said.
Police and building department representatives responded to the scene.
The fire investigator determined that the blaze originated in the second floor unit in the laundry hall, and was caused by a dryer electrical malfunction.
