Jersey City doctor charged in alleged false treatment scheme

JERSEY CITY — Dr. Dan Dumitru, 44, a Hudson County neurologist, was arrested Oct. 27 for allegedly paying a “runner” to bring him patients and then allegedly falsifying the nature of the treatment provided to those patients on claims to the insurance company.
Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman and the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor (OIFP) announced that the arrest of Dr. Dan Dumitru comes one day after a state grand jury charged him with two counts of health care claims fraud, two counts of criminal use of runners, two counts of falsification of medical records, and one count each of conspiracy to use a runner in an alleged scam exposed by undercover OIFP detectives.
As charged in the indictment, Dumitru allegedly paid a runner to recruit patients to his Big Apple Neurology office in Jersey City. Unbeknownst to Dumitru, the “patients” delivered by the runner were actually undercover detectives for the OIFP. Dumitru treated two undercover officers, then allegedly overbilled their insurance company for the care he provided.
