BAYONNE – The Bayonne Fire Department responded to the report of an oil fire Monday night at a Hook Road warehouse and was able to control it in about a half hour, a fire official said.
On Oct. 19, a little before 10:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a call at the ACCEM Warehouse at 63-65 Hook Road, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers. Arriving units witnessed smoke and fire coming from the roof, and learned of fire on the second floor.
Fire crews accessed the west side of the 140,000-square-foot warehouse, and extinguished a fire involving a 200-gallon safflower vat and roofing material that was exposed, Rogers said.
“The fire investigator’s preliminary investigation determined that the fire originated in a hot oil vat, while oil was being transferred through a filtration process, and appeared accidental,” he said. Warehouse managers said that the oil is used to process and roast nuts.
The fire was declared under control a little after 11 p.m.
There were no reported injuries. About 60 workers were evacuated from the building.
Besides ACCEM, a food storage operation, and MTL, a vehicle transport company, three other businesses use the warehouse, according to Rogers.
The Bayonne Police, Health, and Building departments all responded to the incident.
