LANWEHR, HELEN

A funeral mass was offered Oct. 5 at Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Nanty Glo, Pa., for Helen Lanwehr, 97. She passed away at home surrounded by her family on Sept. 30. Born in Nanty Glo, Pa., Helen was a retired Hoboken high school teacher and the founder and president of H.E.A.R.T.S. from 1987-1990. After retirement, Helen also served as the legislative chair of the Hudson County Retired Teachers Association. She was also active with Literacy Volunteers of America at the Kearny Public Library; the First Lutheran Church of America, where she taught Sunday School; and the New Jersey Retired Educators Association, a division of the New Jersey Education Association.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Frederick in 1996. She was predeceased by 10 of her 11 siblings, Michael, Mary, Andrew, John, Joseph, Daniel, Charles, George, Nicholas, and Alexander. She will be greatly missed by her sons, Lawrence Lanwehr and his wife Terry, and Dr. Bernhard H. Lanwehr and his wife Mercedes. A great joy in Helen’s life were her grandchildren, Emilia Penney, Bernhard M. Lanwehr, and Michael Lanwehr. Also surviving is her sister, Anna Doray.
