Bayonne firefighters extinguish two-alarm blaze

BAYONNE – The Bayonne Fire Department put out what is believed to have been an electrical fire on Friday, Oct. 2, a fire official said.
At 9:18 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 83 West 33rd St. on the report of an alarm sounding at that location, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
Arriving firefighters witnessed smoke coming from the unoccupied building, and made a forced entry to discover fire in the rear basement, which extended to the first-floor rear porch.
Extensive work was required to gain access to smoldering pockets of fire in a shower area at the basement level, Rogers said.
Firefighters were able to control the two alarm-blaze in under one hour.
There were no reported injuries.
The 2-1/2 story wood-frame building was reportedly undergoing renovations.
“The fire investigator determined that the fire originated in the rear of the basement in the shower area, and the initial findings are centered on a possible electrical failure,” Rogers said.
