East Coast prepares for possible visit by Hurricane Joaquin
As late as Thursday, weather forecasters were predicting Hurricane Joaquin had the potential to reach the eastern United States coast this weekend, but were still holding out hope the storm might track east out into the Atlantic. The forecasts were alternately saying the storm would slam into Virginia, then into New Jersey in the wee hours of either Monday or Tuesday.
Even if the storm remains offshore, be prepared for heavy rain and flooding this weekend and Monday. Moisture from the storm will still get pulled into the mid-Atlantic and Carolinas, which will likely lead to heavy rainfall and flooding. The storm was expected to strengthen into a Category 4 storm on Thursday night, when Joaquin will begin to turn north.

Ecumenical Thanksgiving service will be Nov. 23
On Monday, Nov. 23, an ecumenical Thanksgiving service will take place at Grace Episcopal Church, Park Avenue at 40th Street (across from Pathmark), Union City, sponsored by the Hispanic Ministers Association. The congregations of Grace Episcopal Church and St. John Lutheran Church, Union City, will be uplifted for their years of ministry to the community.
The bilingual English/Spanish service will be followed by a potluck dinner in the Fellowship Hall.

One-day event to assist homeless veterans
Stand Down of North Jersey will run a one-day event to assist homeless veterans Saturday, October 10, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., John F. Kennedy Pool and Recreation Center, 211 West Kinney Street, Newark. Federal, state, public and private support agencies offer a broad array of free services and assistance: VA benefit counseling, PTSD information, mental health information, welfare, social security, food stamps, addiction information, housing information, medical, employment, unemployment, haircuts, clothing, provisions, and refreshments. Pickup at all locations will be at 8 a.m. Pickup for Hudson County is 115 Christopher Columbus Drive, Jersey City.
Sentencing postponed for DPW supervisors
Sentencing for two North Bergen employees who were accused of illegally using their office to assign public works employees to work on political campaigns and do personal chores at the township’s expense has been postponed until Oct. 19, local media have reported.
Quoting sources, a website said that the two former Department of Public Works supervisors’ sentencing was postponed from Sept. 18.
Several North Bergen employees have either been charged or convicted of corruption over the past three years.
Former DPW boss James Wiley pleaded guilty to official misconduct and said he was ordered to assign North Bergen employees to work on other political campaigns throughout the county. A deputy director, charged with similar offenses, has had his trial postponed several times. More recently, two Recreation Department aides were charged earlier this year with cashing in on low-show jobs.
