A funeral mass was held Sept. 12 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Jersey City, for Rose M. Hawrylak, 81. She died Sept. 4, peacefully at her home with her family at her side. A lifelong resident of Jersey City, she was the daughter of the late Louise (Polito) and Vincent Bertone. Rose’s passion was her Church, Our Lady of Mercy, where she served and volunteered happily. She was an active member of the Rosary Society of Our Lady of Mercy for more than 50 years since its inception. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Our Lady of Mercy. Rose worked for the Jersey City Incinerator Authority for more than 20 years, and retired as the administrative assistant. She was happy to retire so that she would be able to spend time with her children and grandchildren, and of course her late husband Teddy Hawrylak, who had retired from the Jersey City Fire Department after 37 years of service. They led a full and active life, married for 53 years until Teddy passed away in 2009. Rosie will always be remembered as a beautiful, fun loving, energetic woman who brought smiles to everyone she met. Rose was the mother of Theodore Hawrylak, Jr., Amy (Hawrylak) Davies and James Hawrylak; grandmother of Casey Davies, Morgan Davies Katie Hawrylak, Regina Hawrylak and Roman Hawrylak.
