JERSEY CITY — Julio A. Velazquez, 42, Montgomery Street, Jersey City, was arrested on Sept. 16 and charged with theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and outstanding unpaid fines for crimes he allegedly committed in Dunkin’ Donuts on Sept. 11.
At about 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 16, Port Authority Police Office Joshua Oliveri, while on patrol at 12th Street and Marin Boulevard in Jersey City, noticed a suspect whose photo he’d seen in connection with a September 11 theft.
The officer had been provided with a photograph of both the suspect and a bicycle Velazquez allegedly used to flee after the theft.
Velazquez was accused of allegedly taking bags of coffee valued at $120 from the a Dunkin Donuts at 14th and Erie Streets at about 1 p.m. on 9/11.
Witnesses to the crime on 9/11 stated the suspect then mounted his bicycle, which was decorated with a flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and a distinctive seat that was split down the middle.
The officer approached the suspect and placed him under arrest. According to a release from the Port Authority Police, the suspect allegedly said, “I’m an addict.” But he may not have been referring to coffee. Police said he was allegedly in possession of two used wax heroin packets.
A computer check showed two active arrest warrants from Jersey City. The suspect was transported to Hudson County Jail.
The coffee was not recovered.
