Fire Department gets $1.2 million federal grant

JERSEY CITY – The Jersey City Fire Department received $1,163,728 in a federal Assistance to Firefighter Grant to improve safety operations.
The AFG program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA.)
“There is no more selfless job than that of a fire fighter,” said U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, who along with U.S. Senator Cory Booker, and Rep. Albio Sires and Donald Payne, helped obtain the competitive grant. “Investing in firefighters is an investment in our own safety and the safety of our families. This grant will help ensure Jersey City firefighters have the tool they need to protect themselves and keep their residents and the community safe.”
Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea the money will be used to help upgrade the departments self-contained breathing apparatus and to make other safety changes mandated by the federal government.
Among other equipment, the money will be used to purchase new personal protective gear for firefighters including new turnout coats, pants, and books, all of which will meet the new safety standards.
