9/11 ‘Dust Lady’ dies from stomach cancer

BAYONNE – Bayonne resident Marcy Borders, the woman recognized around the world as “The Dust Lady” from a photo taken after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, has died after battling stomach cancer, according to an online report.
The photo, taken by photographer Stan Honda and showing Borders covered from head to toe in dust from the Twin Towers, was picked up by news agencies and distributed worldwide. She was a financial service employee in Lower Manhattan at the time.
Borders died late Tuesday, Aug. 25, according to a report on nj.com, which attributed the information to Facebook posts by Borders’ family members.
Following the attacks, the Bayonne native sank into a depression that lasted 10 years, the report said. She was diagnosed with the stomach cancer a year ago.
