Streets near bridge to remain closed longer

Two city streets that were closed because of work on the Bayonne Bridge reconstruction project that were slated to reopen will now be closed months past their originally scheduled reopening dates, according to an online report.
Gertrude and West First streets, which were to reopen in July and October, respectively, will now both remain closed until December, according to nj.com.

Free public viewings at observatory

The public is invited to come and stargaze every Wednesday at the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority’s William D. McDowell Observatory, 3 DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst.
Upcoming times and dates are 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 8 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.
The program is free and registration is not necessary.
The state-of-the-art observatory features a research-grade telescope with a 20-inch mirror housed beneath a six-meter retractable dome.
“The telescope is capable of viewing objects millions of light years away,” said spokesman Brian Aberback. “This precision instrument is equipped with a variety of tools, including specialized cameras, light-pollution filters, and devices that measure the brightness of stars and analyze wavelengths of light.”
Attendees must be able to climb 25 stairs to reach the observatory.
