SECAUCUS – On Monday, July 27 the Maninagar Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan North America, a non-profit, religious-cultural organization devoted to social welfare and community outreach, held a candlelight vigil to mourn the passing of former Indian president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The ceremony was held at the organization’s North American headquarters at the Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Temple in Secaucus.
Dr. Kalam, an esteemed scientist and eleventh president of India, was commonly known as the “people’s president” and led India’s space and missile initiatives.
The vigil was inspired by Acharya (“teacher”) Shree Purushottampriyadasji Swamiji Maharaj, fifth spiritual heir of Lord Shree Swaminarayan and Acharya of the international Maninagar Shree Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan. Participants performed poojan (prayers) and chanted holy mantras to pray that the merciful Lord Shree Swaminarayanbapa Swamibapa bestows divine, eternal happiness upon Dr. Kalam.
