Heat to rise all week; towns open cooling centers; hoping for no blackouts

HUDSON COUNTY — Accuweather predicts temperatures in the 80s and 90s all week long, with no rain or other relief.
Local towns have started opening cooling centers for those without air conditioning, and have advised people to watch out for their elderly neighbors and make sure children, pets, and pregnant women are properly hydrated. It is easy to lose a lot of water outdoors in this heat.
Incidentally, it is never safe to leave pets or children in the car.
The town of Secaucus opened cooling centers at the library, Recreation Center, and Town Hall Sunday. It is likely that most towns will do so again this week, so check your town’s website.
Having been here a while, we’d like to add that we all know what has happened before when people in the New York area use their air conditioners at once — so be prepared for a loss of electricity.
If you are in an heat emergency, dial 911.
