U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced a Senate Resolution congratulating the United States Women’s National Team on their victory in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“As a proud senator from New Jersey, home to four extraordinary members of the World Cup championship team – Carli Lloyd, Christie Rampone, Tobin Heath and Heather O’Reilly – I’m thrilled to introduce this resolution in celebration of the teamwork, determination, grit and talent which led to their resounding victory, and in recognition of the dedicated friends, family and fans who cheered and supported them every step of the way,” said Menendez.
“As a country, we are incredibly proud of these young women who so impressively represented the United States with their World Cup victory. I am proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution recognizing the tenacity and dedication of this incredible team, the tremendous leadership of head coach Jill Ellis, and the strong support they were shown by the American people,” said Collins.
The team, who is lead by head coach Jill Ellis, won 5 – 2 over Japan – highest scoring Women’s World Cup Final in history, which also included the fastest hat trick by Carli Lloyd by the 16th minute of the game.
The team also had a record-tying 540 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal and became the first team to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup three times.
