Secaucus targets underage drinking with ‘sticker shock’ campaign

SECAUCUS – Eight teenagers placed about 330 bright neon stickers on multi-packs of beer and other alcohol products on Monday, June 22. The Sticker Shock project was sponsored by the Secaucus Coalition for a Healthy and Drug Free Community in partnership with the Hudson County Coalition for a Drug Free Community to remind adults about the legal consequences when buying alcohol and then providing it to individuals under the age of 21.

The legal age to purchase and to drink alcohol is 21 years old. An adult who legally buys alcohol and provides it to a minor faces up to six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

In collaboration with some local businesses, the teenagers were accompanied by the Hudson County and Secaucus Coordinators in placing the stickers on alcohol products that might appeal to underage drinkers. The project represents a collaboration between retailers, parents, community members, prevention professionals, and law enforcement with the goal of creating a healthier environment for youth. “Sticker Shock is a great hands-on activity for teens to feel like they are encouraging positive norms in their community,” said County Coalition Coordinator Karena Malko. “At the end of the day, these high school students felt like they directly contributed to the well-being and safety of their peers. It’s very rewarding for the participants and for the community at large.”
