The time to act is now

Dear Editor:
I’m writing to thank House Representative Sires’ Chief of Staff Gene Martorony for warmly receiving me in Washington for a very productive and lively discussion on Carbon fee and dividend legislation. I was in DC with 900 Citizens Climate Lobby volunteers who met with nearly all 535 Members of Congress over two days to educate legislators and hear their thoughts on our proposed legislation. A revenue-neutral carbon fee which returns all funds directly to US households will grow our economy, add jobs, increase our competitiveness with China, and improve our air and water quality. It is a market-based solution that will wean us off fossil fuels, make renewable energy a far more attractive investment option, and force fossil fuels companies to pay the true costs of their product, which are currently being borne by American taxpayers.
Hudson County residents will surely remember the devastation New Jersey suffered from Superstorm Sandy. These storms are only going to increase in frequency and intensity. We must act now to stop burning carbon fuels and save the collective health of our planet. I encourage all readers to reach out to their Members of Congress in support of our proposal.
