INFIELD FLY RULE
QUESTION: In high school, baseball and softball, runners on first and third, one out; batter lifts a fair fly ball which can be caught with reasonable effort by the shortstop in the infield area. Is this considered an infield fly rule play?
ANSWER: No, there must be two consecutive force out situations on the bases, such as bases loaded or first and second. In above play, this is just a routine fly ball situation. (BB- Rule 2, Sec. 19; SB- Rule 2, Sec. 30).
QUESTION: Bases loaded, one out; batter bunts a fair fly ball which rises a considerable height and can be caught with reasonable effort by an infielder. Umpires do not call infield fly rule. Correct call?
ANSWER: Correct call. Infield fly rule is never in effect during a bunt or line drive play. ( BB& SB- same rules as noted above).
