Port Authority announces bridge closures

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced closures of the Bayonne Bridge as part of the “Raise the Roadway” Navigational Clearance Project.
The remaining multi-hour closures for this week are: Thursday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.; and Friday, May 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. around the
clock until 8 a.m. Sunday, May 31.
When completed, the Raise the Roadway project will elevate the bridge’s roadway 65 feet to 215 feet, to allow larger vessels to pass underneath it.
Closures are weather dependent.

Turnpike issues update on 14A toll plaza project

The New Jersey Turnpike has released a statement about the Interchange 14A Toll Plaza project.
During the weekend of May 29, the western most toll lane (exiting the turnpike, right side) will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, June 1 for new toll lane construction.
Work will continue on the Turnpike Service Road, across from east 53rd Street, to install a temporary bridge foundation.
“Periodic traffic impacts will be experienced, including lane closures and short duration service road closures,” spokeswoman Nicole Pace said.
Utility work on Avenue E between east 50th and 52nd streets will continue, including underground communication, gas main, and water main activities. Daily travel lane shifts are expected.
Utility work will continue on the north side of Pulaski Street within a dedicated work zone. Temporary traffic diversions will be implemented as needed.

Bayonne resident among NJIT graduates honored

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) conferred more than 3,100 degrees at its 99th Commencement Exercises on May 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark, and Bayonne resident Wilfredo Alvizures, a civil engineeriong major, was one of them.
A first-generation college student, Alvizures completed an internship at Boeing, one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, and will launch his career there in August.
Alvizures credited NJIT’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers with helping him find a “familia” away from his hometown of Bayonne.

Bayonne student exhibits at Morris Museum

Emmily Valado of Bayonne has been selected to exhibit her artwork at the 26th Annual Fresh Perspectives Juried High School Art Exhibition at the Morris Museum.
Fifty art works were selected for the exhibition out of nearly 500 entries from all over north and central New Jersey. Emmily, a Bayonne High School sophomore, was the sole award recipient chosen from Hudson County.
The Fresh Perspectives exhibition began in 1989 to give artistically accomplished high school students museum exhibition experience and to recognize art teachers for their encouragement and effective teaching of talented student artists. Emmily is an Art 2 student of teacher MaryAnne Christiana.
Emmily’s work will remain on display at the museum until June 7.

GCT Bayonne recognized with another award

GCT Bayonne won the Innovation category at the recent Navis Inspire Awards in San Francisco.
“We are honored by this international recognition from our peers and extend our sincere congratulations to all the 2015 finalists and winners,” said a company spokesman. “We are certainly in good company.”
The GCT Bayonne Expansion Project is the first Brownfield container terminal in the western hemisphere to be converted to semi-automation. Completed last year, the semi-automated terminal is now the most advanced facility on the continent, a company official said.
The entire GCT Bayonne expansion team was thanked for its hard work and dedication.

HCST Alumni Association holding meet & greet

Hudson County Schools of Technology Alumni Association President Vanessa Cirillo will be hosting a meet and greet on Thursday, May 28 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Havana Rum Room, 7512 Broadway, North Bergen.
Designed to foster lifelong relationships among alumni and keep alumni informed about the activities of the schools, the HCST Alumni Association promotes communications among alumni and current students to help them prepare for life after graduation, according to spokesman Michael Makarski.
