Union City man sentenced on bank, tax charges

A Union City man was sentenced May 19 to 27 months in prison for operating a supposed charitable organization, or “gemach,” as an unchartered bank, accepting millions of dollars in deposits – including nearly $1 million of his own money – which he shielded from state or federal regulation, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced. Moshe Schwartz, 34, a/k/a “David Schwartz” or “Gedalya David Schwartz,” previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares to two counts of an information: operating an unchartered bank and aiding and assisting in the filing of a false 2007 tax return.

Palisades Medical Center honored for care of heart failure and stroke

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association have recognized Palisades Medical Center (PMC) in North Bergen with their 2015 Get With The Guidelines Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Awards for the Medical Center’s treatment of heart failure and stroke patients.
Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps PMC’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track performance. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for heart failure patients, save lives, and ultimately reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks.
Get With The Guidelines-Stroke helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. PMC earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that each year 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications and devices, and with healthy lifestyle changes.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

‘Click It or Ticket’ seat belt enforcement campaign runs through May 31

Law enforcement officers from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office are cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign.
Launched on May 18 and running through May 31, the annual initiative includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and additional patrols, as well as local and national publicity designed to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the life-saving value of seat belts. Extra sheriff’s patrols, paid for with federal grant money, are patrolling the county highways, roads, and parks, day and night.
Front seat belt usage rate in New Jersey currently stands at 87.59 percent. The goal is to increase the statewide rate to 90 percent. This year’s campaign also focuses on rear seat passengers, as well as nighttime enforcement. During evening hours seat belt usage is traditionally lower and the percentage of unbelted fatalities is higher.
During the 2014 “Click it or Ticket” campaign, 374 police agencies participated in the two-week initiative. As a result of the effort, law enforcement officers issued 26,635 seat belt citations, 4,363 speeding summons, and made 944 drunk driving arrests.
