Woods fuels Devils’ fire in overtime win

Taking the court for what would turn out to be an epic encounter, the (1-1) Devils took on the (0-2) Islanders in a week two JCC of Bayonne Sr. Division Floor Hockey bout for the ages. Bursting out to a 4-0 advantage, the Islanders could do no wrong in the first fifteen minutes. Fueling the domination, J. P. Egan railed in two goals while Julian Giron and Jaden Subacz also kicked in with scoring strikes. Adding more fuel to the Isles’ red hot start was the incredible goal tending of Harsh Easwar who piled up 6 saves. Baffled by their lack luster start, Devils’ interim coach Jared Radil shook up his defense and reinstalled Colon Woods at net while unleashing his sharp shooting defensemen Allen “Lefty” McComb and Chloe Gregory. Two minutes after the switch, the Devils started to roll as goals by Mackenzie Woods (3) and Marek Mickiewicz (2) propelled the Devils out to a 5-4 advantage. Also keying the comeback were the ballhawking efforts of the Devils’ Logan Mazziota (1 assist) and Jacob Kowal (2 assists) as the tide turned. Left war weary by their meltdown, the Islanders needed a spark and Elliott Santana came to the rescue with his first goal of the season to send the game into overtime. Deadlocked at 5 all, overtime had a “playoff feel” with both squads battling for the victory. At the 2:40 mark, the Devils’ Mackenzie Woods ended the saga with her fourth goal of the game as the Devils captured a 6-5 come-from-behind overtime victory.
