Fire department responds to gas leak

BAYONNE – The report of a fractured gas pipe on Pulaski Street near the Everlasting warehouse brought a Bayonne Fire Department response on Tuesday, May 12 at about 9 a.m.

Arriving companies determined that pressurized natural gas was escaping from a below-grade 2-inch gas line that had been fractured by workers using excavation equipment, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.

“Firefighters cordoned off the area, vacated two workers from the nearby warehouse, and setup precautionary suppression equipment, while PSE&G entered the excavation to stop the leak,” Rogers said.

The gas leak was stopped a little after 10 a.m., Rogers said, when PSEG crews were able to dig out and secure the leaking pipe.
