The time to act is now

Dear Editor:
Once again the residents of West New York were betrayed by Mayor Felix Roque hand pick board of education trustees. This betrayal hits the very core of our educational system.
Superintendent Fauta announced that he was retiring in December. Does it not seem logical to seek out the best and most qualified candidate as his replacement. Last night, the Board interviewed two superintendent search firms.
Instead of choosing either of these firms, the Board decided it was going to conduct the search by itself and internally only. Isn’t the future of our children important enough to make certain the top person within our educational community has been selected due to his/her qualifications? This only means one thing, those in power already know whom they wish to put in this extremely important position. Hey, why not keep it in the Hudson County political family. Right? Wrong!
Instead of a national superintendent search, there will not even be public advertisements for this position. A typical superintendent search is conducted over the course of 4-6 months and will instead be done in a week.
West New York has the opportunity to fill this position with the most qualified candidate and not a political crony. We need to tell President Steve Rodas and Trustee Silvio Acosta that their loyalty and responsibility is to the children, parents, and residents of West New York, not to the political power brokers.
Let’s tell the Board of Education to conduct a national search!
If you want your child to receive the very best educational opportunity for his/her future, the time to act is now. If you don’t, than only you are to blame when cronyism rears its ugly head again!
