SECAUCUS – A carved stone block found buried in a construction site in Secaucus appears to date from the early 1900s. Wording on the stone refers to Peter Stuyvesant and the Village of Bergen, “the first permanent settlement in New Jersey.”
Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli posted pictures of the block on his Facebook page, saying that it appears to be part of the original pedestal from a statue of Stuyvesant.
“It was built in [approximately] 1910 in Jersey City,” he wrote. “Sometime in the early 60’s it was destroyed by fire. The bronze statue was salvaged but the monument vanished until now.”
He added, “Jersey City Historical Society is in the process of reconstructing this monument and this original piece may once again stand back in its rightful place.”
