New sign that Hudson River is getting cleaner – penguins, flamingos spotted on Hoboken waterfront

HOBOKEN — After a seal was spotted sunning himself in Hoboken last week, observers speculated that it was a sign that the Hudson River is getting cleaner. But Wednesday afternoon, a reader sent what may be an even stronger sign.
As the reader’s photos show, two penguins waddled ashore on the upper waterfront on Wednesday, and a couple of flamingos followed.
Hoboken, once a subject of jokes by old-fashioned comedians and probably Trevor Noah as well, has changed much in the last few decades. It has gradually become a fashionable place to live, raise children, and catch a fish in your mouth.
A spokeswoman for the State Department of Environmental Protection, April Pfule said, “This is one of many signs that the water is getting cleaner and that Hoboken attracts many strange birds.”
The flightless fowl had apparently heard Peter Wolf will be headlining the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival on May 3, co-sponsored by the Hoboken Reporter, and came early because they are long-time fans of the J. Geils Band. They are also monogamous.
