NORTH BERGEN BRIEFS

Library closed until March 22 for roof repairs

The main library will be closed to the public until March 22 for roof repairs. Residents can still pick up items by presenting their library card at the main entrance. Anyone needing assistance or who would like a book pulled can call (201) 869-4715. The staff will continue to serve the public while construction goes on.
The library was closed temporarily last winter for repairs to a different section of the roof.
The Kennedy branch is currently open at 2123 Kennedy Blvd. The branch has extended its hours and will be open on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in addition to their current schedule. Members can also access all of the library’s online databases using a North Bergen library card by visiting www.nbpl.org.
Some children’s classes were canceled while others were moved to the Kennedy branch. Maker’s Day, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 21 will be postponed due to the building repairs. The Alonzo Bodden Comedy Show that was scheduled for Saturday, March 14 was also postponed. New dates will be posted as soon as possible.

North Bergen begins annual pothole repair project, launches pothole hotline

Residents who spot potholes are encouraged to report them to the pothole repair hotline number at (201) 330-7263 or through North Bergen’s NB help desk online system at northbergen.org.
“With the snow melting and the temperature rising, it’s time to get to work filling potholes,” said Mayor Nicholas Sacco. “Our DPW already has an extensive list of potholes but we encourage all residents to report any that they see by calling our pothole repair hotline.”
DPW crews have already begun filling potholes and work will continue for the next few months. The township purchased a new piece of equipment called an asphalt cooker last year, which makes the pothole filling process much more efficient. Following the project, the township will transition to its annual road repair program, whereby selected streets will be completely resurfaced and repaved based on need.
“While our DPW crews did an outstanding job keeping streets plowed during the winter, now we are moving on to filling potholes which is just as important for our residents,” said Commissioner Frank Gargiulo. “Potholes can cause serious damage to cars and trucks and the harsh winter has created many throughout the area that we are now working to fill as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Palisades Medical Center CEO leads March of Dimes effort to improve health of Hudson County babies

More than 12,000 of New Jersey babies will be born premature this year, and Bruce J. Markowitz, president and CEO of Palisades Medical Center, is working with the March of Dimes to change this. Markowitz has taken on the role of Hudson County March for Babies Chair to raise awareness and important funding to provide for babies who are born premature or with birth defects. March for Babies, the March of Dimes largest fundraiser, will be held on April 26, at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.
March for Babies helps fund lifesaving research and educational programs aimed at helping mothers have stronger, healthy babies. Last year, in Hudson County, more than $150,000 was raised. This year, Markowitz will lead participants and the community in making a difference for the health of mothers and babies.
“I am honored to serve in the important role as the chairman of the Hudson County March for Babies,” said Markowitz. ”I believe we can all rally behind the March of Dimes and its mission to help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies.”
