Punjani guides Comets to victory

With both squads out to (1-0) starts, the Comets and Sonics braced for an early season JCC of Bayonne Indoor Soccer Sr. Division duel. Scoring just 38 seconds into the action, the Comets’ Shashwat Punjani hit his mark from halfcourt as Drew Radil registered the assist. Fifteen seconds later, the Sonics answered as James Bajor assisted Allen “Lefty” McComb on a scoring blast. Keeping the pressure on the Comets’ defense, the Sonics took a 2-1 advantage as T. J. Wolf turned a perfect pass from Mackenzie Woods into a scoring shot. With the Sonics on the attack, the Comets fiery midfielder, Jacob Kowal out dueled the Sonics sharp shooters and battled the ball to Shashwat Punjani who knotted the bout at 2 all. Turning to their own speedster, the Sonics answered as Robert Ochoa found a darting Alejandro “See Ya” Cifuentes open in front of the Comets’ net for an “easy” score. Down 3-2, the Comets seemed to enjoy the quick pace as Shashwat Punjuni assisted Jacob Kowal on a breakaway blast. Zip-tied at 3-3 the defenses dug in with Emya Irwin, Kasper Hooks, and Anushka Chakrabarti manning the fort for the Comets while Alejandro Vargas and T. J. Wolf did most of the heavy lifting for the Sonics “D”. Racing towards overtime the Comets’ Jared Radil finally landed a bullseye after 6 near misses as the Comets moved to (2-0) with a 4-3 win.
