Matos, Cifuentes work their magic for Wizards

Coming off their first victory of the season, the (1-2) Dragons entered the JCC of Bayonne Jr. Division Indoor Soccer bout against the (1-2) Wizards with high expectations, Deadlocked in a defensive donnybrook thoughtout most of the first 20 minutes both teams stayed patient. It took a bullseye penalty kick by the Wizards’ Paige Higgins to end the scoring drought as the Wizards gained a 1-0 advantage. Hoping to build on their narrow lead the Wizards found a spark as David Matos drilled in two goals off assists from Higgins and Miguel Vargas to stretch their lead to 3-0. Not to be out done, the Dragons unleashed their big guns as Emya Irwin, Roman Popowski, Lilliana Cordero, Brenna Popowski, and Michael Cordero teamed up to thump 12 shots on net. Unfortunately for the Dragons, the Wizards’ Aaliyana Cifuentes handled the pressure like a pro as she set her sights on her second shutout in net. The action stayed heated until the final whistle with Adonis White bolstering the Wizards’ defense while Vikram Balagura and Raunak Verma played their best game of the season for the Dragons. In the end, the Dragons’ scoring woes and the Wizards’ opportunistic offense proved to be the difference as the Wizards prevailed, 3-0.
