NB mayoral race heats up; Wainstein announces candidacy

NORTH BERGEN – Lawrence “Larry” Wainstein, founder and leader of the group North Bergen Concerned Citizens, announced his candidacy for mayor of North Bergen at an event in Schuetzen Park on Friday night, Feb. 13.
He will have an uphill climb against longtime incumbent Nicholas Sacco, who is also a state senator. Sacco has had little opposition in past elections, and has often won in a landslide.
Pledging to fight for better education, open government, and lower taxes, Wainstein was enthusiastically cheered by a large audience that braved the cold to attend the free event. Amidst harsh criticim of the current administration, Wainstein stated, “It’s time to return North Bergen to its people. I believe there is room for everyone to have equal say in our government.”
The election, scheduled for May, is expected to generate much negative campaigning, which has already begun on both sides.
Also speaking at the event was Mario Blanch, attorney for Concerned Citizens, who introduced Wainstein as “a genuine example of the American dream.”
The event was promoted as a free Valentine’s Day party with food, music, and dancing.
