‘Springtime in Sorrento’ benefit dinner

The Friends of Saint Francis Organization will present a “Springtime in Sorrento” dinner party on Saturday, March 7 to benefit the Felician Sisters’ ministry for children and supportive programs for families of seriously ill youngsters.
“For more than 100 years, the Felician Sisters have served the local community in education, medicine, compassionate care and more, and have made a positive impact on countless lives through their dedicated service, concern for the poor and good stewardship,” President Cindy Macon said.
The event will be held at Heart of Jesus Parish Hall, 290 Ave. E.

Talk scheduled about life after prison
“Planet Prison, Understanding the Life of an Ex-Offender,” will be presented from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at New Jersey City University.
The event is free and will be held in the G-SUB Room 129.
“The program is an educational and entertaining perspective on what it means to be unlocked,” said event organizer Corrado DiVincenzo.
Bayonne and Jersey City elected officials and administrators have been invited to attend.

Poetry series presents author Kathleen Norris

The Valente and Blihar Families Poetry Series will present award-winning poet Kathleen Norris on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Saint Peter’s University in the Duncan Family Sky Room of the MacMahon Student Center, 47 Glenwood Ave., Jersey City.
Norris is a poet, writer, and author of The New York Times bestsellers “The Cloister Walk,” “Dakota: A Spiritual Geography,” and “Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith.”
Exploring the spiritual life, Norris’s work features poetry and meditations, examining both nature and spirit.
The Valente and Blihar Series is sponsored by Judith Valente Reynard, Saint Peter’s University alumna and award-winning journalist. She has published two volumes of poetry and a nonfiction book.

Child advocate group holding informational session

Hudson County CASA (court appointed special advocate) is recruiting volunteers to advance the best interests of abused and neglected children.
An informational session, addressing the program and the role of its volunteers, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 901 of the Hudson County Administration Building, 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City.

Baseball tryouts being held on Sunday

The Bayonne Barracudas Travel Baseball Organization will hold tryouts for the 2015 season on Sunday, Feb. 8 at St. John’s Baptist Parish, 15 East 26th St.
Attendees must bring a birth certificate copy, glove, bat, and sneakers.
