Tuesday storm update: Predictions downgraded; travel ban set Monday night; Secaucus and other towns prepared; shelter needs donations

HUDSON COUNTY — Predictions of one to two feet of snow in Hudson County failed to materialize overnight on Tuesday, but Accuweather still predicted anywhere from 3 to 6 inches more before the day was through, and other news outlets predicted 1 to 3 more inches.
The state of New Jersey issued a travel ban as of 11 p.m. on Monday night. The city of Hoboken issued one as of 9 p.m.
Most businesses and schools were closed Tuesday as snowplows pushed the white stuff out of the way. High winds and cold temperatures still made it difficult to go out.
In Secaucus, officials from the fire department, police, office of emergency management, department of public works, senior and community services, and representatives from Meadowlands Hospital met with the mayor and council members Monday afternoon for a final review of storm preparations. A total of 28 dedicated plows were ready to remove snow from the streets. Approximately 500 to 600 tons of salt were stockpiled and ready to be spread as needed, with another 100 tons on order.
As always, dial 911 for an emergency. The phone number for PSEG is (800) 350-7734
In Secaucus, anyone with special needs (oxygen, nebulizer, etc) should call the non-emergency police department number at (201) 867-8000 to be included on a list in the event of power loss or other unforeseen situations. The Huber Street School is available as a shelter in the event of a large scale power outage, with on-site generators.
Other towns also offered warming shelters. Hoboken hosted one at the Wallace Primary School overnight on Monday. It was not determined whether it would continue Tuesday night.
As a reminder, it is both illegal and unsafe to shovel snow into the streets. In addition, residents are asked to do their part and help to keep neighborhoods safe by clearing snow from all four sides of fire hydrants to make them easier to locate by firefighters in an emergency.
Due to the Winter Storm Emergency PERC was in dire need of donations as hosted a vast number of people coming in to avoid the blizzard. They run a shelter in Union City, and other services.
