Ballance, Bajor fuel Eagles win

It’s “tune up” time for all three of the JCC of Bayonne’s Sr. Division Indoor Flag Football squads as they ready themselves for next week’s “Championship Tournament.” In game one, the (3-7) Eagles took on the (5-6) Chargers in a playoff match preview. The Eagles struck first as James Bajor’s interception and 30 yard return set up Jacob Kowal’s 5 yard TD scamper. After settling in, the Chargers’ offense answered with James Johnson blasting in for a 10 yard TD run to tie the game at 6-6. Relying mostly on short tosses to their running backs, Chris Ballance, Eric Solis, and Anthony Minotto, the Eagles worked the ball up court to cash in with a TD strike to James Bajor making it 12-6, Eagles. Bajor then made his presence known defensively by picking off his 2nd pass attempt and returning it for a score to stretch the Eagles lead to l8-6. Using their big men, Kevin Aguilar, Jaden Subacz, and Jalen Nash to stretch the field the Chargers hit paydirt as QB Brandon Kobryn fired a TD dart to James Johnson to cut the Eagles’ lead to 18-12. With their running game bottled up by the Chargers’ ballhawking defense, the Eagles turned to Ryan Ballance who sliced through the endzone to reel in a 10 yard TD pass as the Eagles went up 24-12 to close out the first half. Catching the Eagles in a “cover two” defense the Chargers opened the second half with a draw play to speedster Alejandro “See Ya” Cifuentes to close the gap to 24-18, Eagles. The rest of the second half became a defensive stalemate until the Eagles’ Ryan Ballance broke free with a wire to wire TD gallop putting the Eagles up 30-18 with less than three minutes remaining. The Chargers did take one last shot at the endzone but the ball drifted just out of the reach of a wide open Kasper Hooks as the Eagles notched a 30-18 win.
