Funeral services were held Jan. 12 for Bernard Eugene McCarthy, 91, a lifetime Jersey City resident. He died on Jan. 6. During World War II, Mr. McCarthy served in the Army as a member of Company B 294th Engineer C Battalion. He received a Good Conduct Medal, and a Purple Heart. He worked as a postal carrier until retirement. Bernie was born in Jersey City to Bernard McCarthy and Julia Galick. He married Martha Schaefer on June 26, 1948, and was predeceased by his wife on June 11, 2013. He is survived by his daughter, Eileen Tangeman; his grandchildren, Laura Celik, Jennifer Tangeman, and Michael Tangeman; and his two great-grandchildren.
