HOBOKEN — Hoboken is a town filled with thousands of renters, as well as wealthy homeowners and growing families. It’s got a diverse population. Over the last few years, the number of people from racial minority groups in powerful city positions has shrunk to almost none, even though the city still maintains a significant population of Latin Americans and African Americans. (See sidebar at end of this piece for info.)
But is the lack of diversity more glaring than that? In this week’s Hoboken Reporter letters, an observer claims that the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustments — the board that decides on developments that deviate from zoning guidelines — has virtually no renters and little ethnic diversity, with no one representing those sizeable populations in town. In fact he says, it’s almost all millionaire homeowners.
