Water line break in Kearny lowers Bayonne water pressure

BAYONNE – A break at the aqueduct in Kearny that supplies water to Bayonne resulted in lost water pressure to the entire city of Bayonne for hours on Jan. 15, a city official said.
At 2:12 p.m., City Hall spokesman Joseph Ryan said that the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority and United Water were working to address the problem.
“Water (pressure) will be restored as soon as possible,” Ryan said.
The city said it would make additional announcements as additional information became available.
Additionally, multiple sources told the Bayonne Community News that United Water’s Bayonne crews were repairing leaks to as many as three water mains in the city.
At 2:22 p.m., emergency crews were said to be making repairs to a six-inch water main on Linnet Street between Oak Street and Isabella Avenue, according to one source. Emergency crews were also said to be making repairs to a six-inch water main on 46th Street.
Residents had been notified that they would be without water service until repairs are completed, according to the source.
“We appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding while we work to complete the repairs as quickly and safely as possible,” was the statement attributed to United Water.
At 2:19 p.m., Lois Adlin, a resident at the Boulevard Gardens at 50th Street and Kennedy Boulevard, had said she was “outraged” that with the alleged multiple water main breaks Bayonne was experiencing, the city had not used the community notification system.
At 3 p.m., Adlin said her residence was still without water. However, at this point she said she had “received a robocall from the mayor.”
By 3:30 p.m. it still could not be confirmed that the alleged water main breaks were connected to the Kearny incident. Calls to a City Hall contact and the Bayonne Department of Public Works were not immediately returned.
