Port Authority employee rescued from Bayonne Bridge

BAYONNE – A Port Authority of New York & New Jersey bridge inspector fainted on Jan. 14 while on Bayonne Bridge scaffolding and had to be rescued from the interstate crossing, an authority spokesman said.
The employee was on the span inspecting work being done on the “Raise the Roadway” project.
At about 10:30 a.m., the Bayonne Bridge Police Desk received calls that a Port Authority employee had passed out while on the bridge, according to authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo.
“The subject, a 54-year-old male, was up on one of the anchors, about 20 to 40 feet in the air, when he fainted,” said an authority statement.
Port Authority Police Department units responded and called for an emergency medical services unit. With the help of PAPD, the employee was placed in a basket and transported down.
After being treated by EMS personnel, the man was transported to Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, N.Y.
The location of the incident was the New York abutment in the Richmond Terrace compound at Morningstar Road, Staten Island.
The incident was resolved in less than 20 minutes, according to Pentangelo, and there was no disruption to traffic.
