Assemblyman Garcia sponsoring MLK essay contest; deadline Sunday

HOBOKEN–In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, state Assemblyman Carmelo G. Garcia (D-33) is asking students to write an essay about how they plan to serve and improve their community. The goal of the contest is to encourage young people to think about ways they can make a positive difference in society and help keep Dr. King’s Dream alive.
Garcia says this contest will teach young people the value of public service. “‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?’ This quote by civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. should inspire us all,” said Garcia. “It’s a call to action, that we all are indeed our brother’s keeper. And we can all make a difference, regardless of age or abilities. This essay contest will challenge students to consider how they can become thoughtful, compassionate, and productive members of our society. And hopefully inspire them to follow my mantra … we can, we will, watch us make a difference.”
Hoboken students in seventh through tenth grades are eligible to enter the essay contest. All essays should be approximately 500 words and submitted via email to asmgarcia@njleg.org. The deadline is Sunday, Jan. 18. Winners will receive gift cards and an award from Assemblyman Garcia. The results will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
